Hello there, my name is Brian David Anderson,
and here are some common elements of my life from age 12 to age 33.
Back when I was 12 years old it was discovered that I had extra nerves inside of my heart.
You know the nerves that electrical current travels down to make the chambers of your heart beat so that your blood pumps throughout your body?
Well, I found out that I had an extra pathway that began acting up one day back in 1979.
When I say "acting up", what I mean is that during that first trip to the Emergency Room,
the nurse couldn't count my pulse, not because it was slow or weak, but after hooking
me up to the ER monitors, my heart was going 255 beats per minute!
Have you ever felt exhausted and afraid? Me too.
Looking up into the faces of the nurses and cardiologist as they discuss what to do next,
even as a young boy, you can sense their fear and uncertainty. An hour goes by,
then two, then three hours, and the medications they tried were not converting
my heart rhythm back to normal. Finally after Nine Hours, something worked
and it began beating a normal rhythm, at a normal pace.
My 12 year old vocabulary did not possess the words to adequately
describe the relief I felt, just "Wow, I can catch my breath again."
After a few days in the ICU, the Doctor legally has to discuss what they think
is going on, and that this condition, although not entirely uncommon, could
be fatal if they are unable to convert the heart rhythm back to normal.
This is pretty heavy information to swallow, and my poor Mom,
I can't imagine how helpless she felt. On top of that, I'm told to
"Avoid Stress and Caffeine", well I didn't know what stress was,
but when I found out that Chocolate has Caffeine in it,
that right there is mighty sad news for a kid!
This one experience would be enough to freak anybody out, and,
I suppose I could say I've been blessed to have had to confront my
mortality at an early age. But I wasn't expecting to have to seriously contemplate
it 10, 20, 30, 40 times. I've lost count, but have been a patient in Hospitals and
Emergency Rooms somewhere between 40 and 50 times just for that one problem.
Technology for fixing these problems has come a long way and is now a daily procedure,
but it wasn't yet invented when my heart first went haywire.
What does this have to do with hypnosis? Around 6 years after my heart troubles began,
I went to see a therapist, although his title was Social Worker, he had extensive training in
and a fascination with hypnosis and was so good at it. Working with him had such a
calming, positive impact on me that I began borrowing every "seminar on cassette"
that he had, I studied countless information that had to do with the mind.
Attending seminars, devouring books, becoming certified in a number
of disciplines, helping myself, helping others, and throughout my
various jobs and businesses, personal development has been a
constant for nearly 30 years, and still is today.
It was such a revelation to me that we could impact our own thoughts and emotions,
instead of just reacting to whatever challenges life throws our way.
We can use these skills to create new behaviors and brighter futures, if I may brag,
I got to the point where I could calmly walk into the emergency room,
heart racing out of control, and tell the receptionist what was going on,
and they wouldn't believe me until I was hooked back up to the machines.
Can I promise you'll be just as relaxed in the face of a challenge? No.
Have I freaked out at times? You better believe it!
I can teach you what has helped me get through and get over a lot of tough times.
I'm only mentioning the medical challenges, and there have been more of a different nature,
and yes, at times it is frustrating, but I like to borrow the military saying: "Not Dead? Can't Quit."
